Why is body composition so important for health?

A “normal” balance of body fat is associated with good health and longevity.  Excess fat in relation to lean body mass, a condition known as altered body composition, can greatly increase your risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis and much more.   Research shows that people with a lower ratio of fat to lean body mass have lower risk of disease and can fight off illness easier.   This may be due to the efficient utilization of energy at the cellular level which creates a more balanced body, one that works optimally.  Research also shows that people with higher muscle stores are less likely to become ill from viruses, bacteria and toxins.  We now know that healthy eating habits and exercise can greatly reduce fat (especially belly fat) and help maintain or increase muscle and other lean body mass such as organ tissues and bone.  Poor diets and inactivity can actually cause your body to break down lean body mass instead of fat which reduces immunity and leaves your body more susceptible to illness and disease.

We now have the technology to test body composition and cellular integrity.  Bioimpediance analysis (BIA) measures your tissues and also gives us cellular fluid distribution.  It is important to view the body at the cellular level.  When fluid is in excess on the outside of the cell, it may mean the cell is not functioning at optimal levels and is experiencing stress or cell death.    When fluid is greater inside the cell, this means it is a healthy cell and functioning optimally.  If the cells are healthy, they will utilize energy and burn fat more efficiently, control hormones better and create a balanced body. A balanced body will have a healthier immunity and be better able to fight disease, illness, and day to day stressors.

It’s not just about losing weight.  It’s about losing FAT, changing body composition, improving health and living longer happier life.  The fat loss is simply a bonus.
